Doctors pay in Scotland - what next?

All doctors deserve a fair pay rise, which is why this year we are asking for a pay award this year of inflation plus 2%.

Even this would only be the first step towards pay restoration after the years of pay erosion we have seen. However, if the Scottish Government refuse this then it is not just the medical profession that will suffer, it is the wider NHS and, most importantly, patients.  Failure to do so, would risk losing more doctors and undermine any serious attempt to address lengthening waiting lists.

We also know, though, that many doctors and medical students - the future of our profession - don't know how pay works in Scotland and what can be done to influence this. At a time of what is being called an unprecedented cost of living crisis, we are inviting all BMA members to attend this short interactive discussion with our professional staff and member representatives to better understand how the pay system works in Scotland and what the BMA, as your trade union, is doing to try to progress better rises for members (as well as some advice on what you can do to use current contracts to improve your own situation and maximise your current pay.

We will use your feedback at this session to help inform our campaign and to let you know what you can do to try to influence decisions by the Scottish Government.

The session will be held over MS teams, starting at 6pm on Wednesday 8 June 2022.
